BLIND MELON - - - Soup (1995)
Alt-rockers in the classic rock tradition. I like
this better than their more popular first album. |
BLUR - - - The Great Escape (1995)
A fine album by one of the best bands of the decade. |
ELECTRAFIXION - - - Burned (1995)
Hard rock incarnation of Echo & the Bunnymen members.
GARBAGE
- - - Garbage (1995)
Please help me. Shirley Manson hypnotized me. I
am a slave. |
JETHRO TULL - - - Roots to Branches (1995)
An excellent late-Tull work. |
KING CRIMSON - - - THRAK (1995)
Fripp still hasn't come down from his peak creativity.
MEDICINE - - - Her Highness (1995)
A noisy, wall-of-guitars, 90s sound, but tasty.
"Candy, Candy" is a gem. |
ALANIS MORISSETTE
- - - Jagged Little Pill (1995)
When Alanis first became popular on the radio,
she was like fingernails on a blackboard to me. A few years later, I had
an inexplicable urge to check this album out, and fell heels over head for
it. |
SMASHING
PUMPKINS - - - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995)
First time I sampled this masterpiece in a used
record store, I passed on it because it sounded so noisy. I finally found
the melody in Billy's voice, and now the "noise" is just great rock.

FIONA APPLE
- - - Tidal (1996)
Fiona is a major talent. A fine debut with some
intoxicating songs, like "The First Taste" and ""Slow
Like Honey." |
JOHN
CALE - - - Walking on Locusts (1996)
John Cale, ex-Velvet Underground, is much less
known than Lou Reed. Not to knock Lou, who is a fine artist, but John is
far more talented and prolific. His works range from punk to "classical."
One of the most underappreciated artists in rock. |
KULA
SHAKER - - - K (1996)
A perfect neo-psychedelic rocker. |
"Strangefolk" album |
MARIA
McKEE - - - Life Is Sweet (1996)
She can sing shivers down my spine. Her "Ultimate
Collection," covering material up to and including the "Life is Sweet" album,
is superb. The 2003 "High Dive" is also fine. |
"Ultimate Collection"
WILCO -
- - Being There (1996)
Their debut "A.M." is also outstanding.
BLUR - -
- Blur (1997)
Rocks! |
FAITH NO MORE - - - Album of the Year (1997)
Excellent hard rock album. Hot tracks: Ashes to
Ashes, Last Cup of Sorrow. |
"This Is It: The Best of Faith No More"
PAUL McCARTNEY - - - Flaming Pie (1997)
Good late-McCartney work. "Flaming Pie"
refers to a dream of John's. |
RADIOHEAD
- - - OK Computer (1997)
A classic album, the "Dark Side of the Moon" of
the 90s. |
TARNATION - - - Mirador (1997)
Tarnation leaves alt-country behind with Paula
Frazer's exquisite, almost classical vocals set against a neo-Spanish guitar
sound. |
VERVE -
- - Urban Hymns (1997)
Great album. Great band that was destroyed too
soon. |
JEFF BUCKLEY - - - Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk
(1992-1997)
An excellent post-mortem production. Disc 1 rocks.
Disc 2 is more experimental. |
ELVIS COSTELLO/BURT BACHARACH - - - Painted From Memory
(1998)
Bacharach hasn't lost his golden touch. Elvis sings.
GARBAGE - - - Version 2.0 (1998)
Another heap of great stuff that is not biodegradable.
BRIAN
WILSON - - - Imagination (1998)
A pop masterpiece, so sugary sweet I must listen
in moderation or I go daffy when the melodies replay endlessly in my mind.
BETH ORTON - - - Central Reservation (1998-1999)
Sweet, intimate folk-pop. |
BLUR - - - 13 (1999)
Bounces between dreamy tracks and rock-out tracks. |
FIONA APPLE - - - When the Pawn (1999)
Strong second album. |
FLAMING LIPS - - - The Soft Bulletin (1999)
A noisy, idiosyncratic band. This album has some
of their most sublime moments. |
MACY GRAY - - - On How Life Is (1999)
She's not trying to sound like anybody else, the
music is all her own sound. |
SHELBY LYNNE - - - I Am Shelby Lynne (1999)
Country artist who created a fine, pure pop album
here. |
ALICE IN CHAINS - - - Nothing Safe (1990-1999)
Out of the Seattle grunge scene, these heavy rockers
never lack a good hook on this collection of their best. |
BJORK - - - Greatest Hits (1993-2002)
She's definitely done some interesting stuff. I
like her dreamy"Vespertine" album. |
