Georgia Islands
August - September 2002

Thursday

We had a delicious dinner at the Mediterranean Greek Grill in St. Mary's. When the owner of the restaurant found out Angie had been to Delphi, Greece, he beamed - Delphi was his home village.

Friday

On St. Simons Island, we found the best waves of the week for body surfing.

Saturday

On the ferry ride to Cumberland Island, we saw dolphins. The sky was heavily overcast and it rained. On the island, armadillos boldly approached seeking handouts of food, wild turkey moved in flocks, wild horses grazed, and rusting vintage cars sprouted weeds. We explored the Dungeness mansion ruins.

We hiked to the beach and walked along the shore, into the driving rain. I had to hold the big beach umbrella almost horizontally in front of me. Moving it aside to get a view of the shoreline ahead for a few moments was enough to get me thoroughly soaked, and then the umbrella became almost superfluous. Oyster catchers scurried along the sand. Our eyes sorted through the shells and beach debris as we walked. We found the shell of a giant horseshoe crab. And a spiky, bulbous, black and white striped fish.

Waiting for the return ferry, we tried to partly dry off under the electric hand dryers in the washrooms. It wasn't until the ferry ride back that the sun finally broke through the clouds and a rainbow appeared. We ate at the Mediterranean Greek Grill again.

Sunday

At Jeckyll Island beach, the sand was blowing. We swam. At the club, we had sandwiches and key lime pie. We walked around the club, looked at the pool, and met a resident tiger-striped cat. Then we browsed at a bookstore across the road.

Monday

Back to the beach at St. Simons Island. Angie and I walked down the beach and around an expansive tidal pool.

We drove to the lighthouse and climbed its winding iron stairs to the outside observation balcony, where Liz clung to the wall as if she were standing on a three-inch wide ledge in a hurricane.

Back at Liz's, Liz grilled delicious shrimp shish-kabobs and we watched a suspense movie that was filmed on Jeckyll Island.

Tuesday

We drove by Liz's lot on Blythe Island on our way to see where Liz works, where Liz gave us a tour and we had lunch in the cafeteria. We went to Liz's condo to swim in the pool, then hit the tourist shops in St. Mary's. We finished our last day's outing with dinner on the porch of a restaurant.
